With four species of salmon returning in the millions each summer, the trout benefit from an incredible abundance of salmon-based food. It’s no wonder this wild fishery produces some of the largest rainbow trout in the world. Fish in excess of 30 inches are not easy to catch but they are also not uncommon. If you are ready to book a trip with a professional Kenai Peninsula river fishing guide, we are here to help you get out on the water. - [Why Bachatna Creek Remains One of Alaska’s Best-Kept Silver Salmon Secrets](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing/bachatna-creek/why-bachatna-creek-remains-one-of-alaskas-best-kept-silver-salmon-secrets/): After flying clients into remote corners of Cook Inlet for over three decades, I've learned that the best fishing isn't always found where the crowds go. Bachatna Creek proves this point better than almost any other fly-in destination I know. Bachatna Creek is a hidden gem for fly-out fishing in Alaska. This small creek on the west side of Cook Inlet doesn't make anyone's list of famous Alaska rivers, and most anglers have never heard of it. That's exactly what makes it special. - [Resurrection Bay and Seward’s Marine Environment](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/seward/resurrection-bay-and-sewards-marine-environment/): Seward sits at the head of Resurrection Bay, one of Alaska's most productive saltwater fishing environments. The bay's deep fjord structure, proximity to the Gulf of Alaska, and convergence of cold ocean currents create conditions that support exceptional populations of halibut, rockfish, and salmon. After decades of fishing throughout the Kenai Peninsula, I've come to appreciate what makes this particular corner of Alaska special. As your Cook Inlet halibut fishing charters team, we bring that same deep appreciation and decades of local expertise to every saltwater trip, ensuring you are positioned for the best action Resurrection Bay has to offer. - [The West Foreland Silver Salmon Corridor](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing/kustatan-river/the-west-foreland-silver-salmon-corridor/): The west side of Cook Inlet hosts some of Alaska's most productive silver salmon habitat, and the West Foreland region stands out as the heart of this fishery. After flying guests here for over three decades, I've learned that understanding this landscape—how it functions, why the rivers behave as they do—makes the difference between good fishing and exceptional fishing. The Kustatan silver run is a highlight of Alaska fly-in fishing from Soldotna. - [The Tordrillo Mountains and Chuitna River Watershed](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing/chuit-river/the-tordrillo-mountains-and-chuitna-river-watershed/): The Chuitna River begins its 25-mile journey in a landscape most Alaska visitors never see—the remote Tordrillo Mountains at the western edge of the Alaska Range. I've been flying to the Chuit for nearly three decades, and understanding this watershed's unique characteristics helps explain why it fishes so differently from our glacial-fed systems. The Chuit is one stop on our Alaska fly-out fishing trips across Cook Inlet. - [Exploring Lake Clark National Park and the Crescent Lake Region](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing/crescent-lake/exploring-lake-clark-national-park-and-the-crescent-lake-region/): When you fly into Crescent Lake for a day of fishing, you're landing in one of Alaska's most spectacular protected wilderness areas. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve encompasses over 4 million acres of pristine backcountry, and the Crescent Lake drainage sits in one of its most dramatic corners—beneath the towering presence of Mount Redoubt. - [Kenai River Fishing Report: 2025 The Year In Review](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/kenai-river-fishing-report-2025-the-year-in-review/): As Alaska enters another winter season, it’s once again time to look back on the highs and lows of another incredible year of fishing on the Kenai Peninsula. 2025 marked our 34th year of guiding in Alaska, which means 2026 will be our 35th season on these waters. It’s hard to believe it’s been that many years—some days it feels like just yesterday I was a fresh college graduate looking for adventure in the Greatland. Time really does fly when you’re having fun, and each season seems to move faster than the last. As your professional Alaska river fishing guide team, we look forward to the 2026 season kicking off and reflecting on an unforgettable 2025. - [Kenai River Late-Run King Salmon Just Meet Recovery Goal](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kenai-river/kenai-river-late-run-king-salmon-just-meet-recovery-goal/): After several years of falling short of minimum escapement objectives, the 2025 late run of Kenai River king salmon narrowly met the recovery threshold of 14,250 large kings (greater than 34 inches). By the final day of counting, the cumulative sonar estimate stood at 15,015 fish. This benchmark was established under the Kenai River Late Run Action Plan, adopted by the Alaska Board of Fisheries at the 2024 Upper Cook Inlet meeting. Throughout all of our guided Kenai king salmon fishing trips, we remain dedicated to monitoring these critical recovery metrics and the resulting management decisions for the upcoming season. - [2025 was a Banner Year for Kasilof Sockeye](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/2025-was-a-banner-year-for-kasilof-sockeye/): In a year that saw record sockeye returns to the Kenai River, the Kasilof River delivered an equally impressive showing. By August 9, a total of 1,197,471 sockeye had passed the sonar at river mile 8, surpassing the previous record of 971,604 set in 2022. Peak run timing occurred between June 30 and July 26, with most days seeing 25,000 to 40,000 fish moving upriver. On June 25, 2025, the sockeye salmon limit on the Kasilof River was increased from three to six fish per person, per day. All of our Kasilof Sockeye Salmon Fishing Trips were booked solid and there was no rest for the weary! - [Kenai Sees a Stronger Silver Salmon Return in 2025](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kenai-river/kenai-sees-a-stronger-silver-salmon-return-in-2025/): The 2025 silver salmon run on the Kenai River proved to be a standout season, with many anglers reporting size and aggression levels that surpassed expectations from previous years. While the 2024 season faced stricter management measures, the 2025 run offered more consistent opportunities, rewarding those who adapted to shifting river conditions. As your guided Kenai silver salmon trip team, we were pleased to see so many of our guests connect with these hard-fighting fish. - [2025 Recap: A Record Run of Kenai Sockeye](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kenai-river/2025-a-record-run-of-kenai-sockeye/): Looking for the live 2026 Kenai sockeye count? Cindy and I are profoundly grateful for all the amazing customers, both new and old, and also for our incredible help as without them it would all be impossible. The countless hours we all put in to make it happen each and every day seem like a blur as we look back over the past five months. Time definitely flies when you are catching fish. As your Kenai River guided sport fishing team, we look forward to the memories we will build in the future. - [2024 Upper Cook Inlet Board of Fisheries Meeting: February 23 – March 5, 2024](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kenai-river/2024-upper-cook-inlet-board-of-fisheries-meeting-february-23-march-5-2024/): The most significant action taken at the Upper Cook Inlet Finfish Meeting held from February 23 to March 5, 2024, was in response to the "stock of concern" status for Kenai River Late-Run King Salmon. The Alaska Board of Fisheries adopted a comprehensive Kenai River Late-Run King Salmon Action Plan to guide recovery efforts. This management plan establishes a recovery goal of 14,250 to 30,000 large (75 cm or greater) king salmon. Achieving this goal takes priority over maximizing the harvest of sockeye salmon. Under this plan, the department is directed to manage fisheries—including commercial, sport, and personal use—with significant restrictions until the stock meets specific delisting criteria, which include reaching the recovery goal for multiple consecutive years. As your Kenai River guided fishing service team, we remain fully committed to supporting these conservation efforts to ensure the long-term health and future of these iconic runs. - [Alaska Fishing Report: 2023 Year In Review](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/2023/alaska-fishing-report-2023-year-in-review/): This 2023 season recap is part of Mark's Alaska fishing reports — year-by-year coverage of Kenai Peninsula salmon, trout, and steelhead seasons going back over a decade. - [2020 Upper Cook Inlet Alaska Board of Fisheries Meeting yielded several important victories for sportfishing Inlet Wide.](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/king-salmon/2020-upper-cook-inlet-alaska-board-of-fisheries-meeting-yielded-several-important-victories-for-sportfishing-inlet-wide/): The triannual Board of Fisheries meeting for upper Cook Inlet took place in early February in Anchorage and the seven member board, many selected by newly elected governor Mike Dunleavy, voted in favor of several proposals that shifted fish away from commercial fisheries and into the rivers. - [A King for a Queen](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/king-salmon/a-king-for-a-queen/): Running a fishing business on the world famous Kenai River may seem like a dream job to some, but those that have “lived this dream” know it’s not always about bent rods and screaming drags. Fact is, even though we love to fish, during the peak of the season and the business, we rarely get to fish for king salmon on the Kenai River. In fact, we can go entire seasons without getting to wet a line for king salmon ourselves. That has certainly been the case in recent seasons for Cindy and me, as mediocre runs of king salmon along with the business, raising three girls, and life in general have not allowed us the time to get out and fish for kings, even though they swim right past our home annually. Fortunately, this past July we did get the opportunity to spend a few hours fishing for kings just downriver from our property. As your best Kenai River guide in Soldotna, I cherish those rare moments on the water. - [Alaska Fishing Report: 2019 Year In Review](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/2019/alaska-fishing-report-2019-year-in-review/): And just like that, the 2019 season is in the books.  And what a season it was.  I have said it a million times but will say it again, every season has its own distinct personality and 2019 was indeed unique.  Unfortunately, our 2019 king runs seemed to follow an all too familiar trend with lackluster returns, restrictions and just overall unpredictable fishing.  By far the most remarkable and memorable theme for 2019 was blue bird skies and sockeye, sockeye and more sockeye. - [Why Fish the Kasilof River? – Why Not!](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kasilof-river/why-the-kasilof-why-not/): Why Fish the Kasilof River? That's a great question! While there is certainly no doubt the Kenai is the world’s most famous salmon river—home to the largest kings on earth and the place of piscatorial dreams—just 20 minutes down the Sterling Highway is the Kasilof. It is a river slightly smaller than the Kenai, but equally rich in historic angling lore and, yes, huge salmon. While they share many similarities, the differences between the two glacial streams are vast. As your expert Kasilof River fishing charter team, we specialize in helping you understand those nuances, providing a more intimate, drift-boat-only experience that allows you to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the true, quiet beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. - [Alaska Fishing Report: 2018 Year In Review](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/2018/alaska-fishing-report-2018-year-in-review/): After 28 seasons guiding on the Kenai River, you would think the summers would blur together. Remarkably, each season has proved to be surprisingly unique and 2018 was definitely no exception. Unfortunately, the 2018 season will not be remembered for remarkable returns of either king salmon or sockeye but it will go down as one of the better early runs of silver and pink salmon as well as a very good late season for trophy trout and steelhead. Overall, as your Kenai River guided fishing expeditions provider, it was another amazing season and despite the up and downs we feel blessed to spend yet another summer basking in the midnight sun and chasing tails. - [Views of the Kenai River](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-peninsula-fishing-locations/kenai-river/views-of-the-kenai-river/): These pictures are taken from our riverside property using a panoramic camera to capture both upriver and downriver views. We hope you enjoy seeing how different the river looks at different times of the year. As your Kenai River cabins & lodging provider, we find that the ever-changing landscape of the Kenai is just as captivating as the world-class fishing it provides.. March 10, 2019 January 2, 2019 February 2, 2018 August 28, 2013 July 21, 2013 - [Not as many Pinks in 2016, but they were BIG!!!](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/pink-salmon/not-as-many-pinks-in-2016-but-they-were-big/): Oddly enough, Pink salmon on the Kenai River return only on even years. The smallest and most abundant of the Pacific Salmon, Pinks or Humpback Salmon have a strict two-year life cycle. From the moment they emerge from the gravel in early spring, juvenile pinks head for the salt where they mature for a full year and return the following fall as adults. This is the prime time for Kenai River pink salmon fishing! On the Kenai, we see the bulk of the pinks arrive (on even years only) in the first two weeks of August. They are tough to miss as the total run sometimes tops several million fish. The pinks in 2016 arrived very close to their normal time in late July and early August, but their overall numbers were not quite as high as previous returns. Fewer fish had no significant impact on fishing success, as it was a fish on every cast as usual. One difference we did notice with the pink return this year was the average size of the fish was noticeably larger than normal. If you want to experience the intensity of a run firsthand, contact your Kenai River sportfishing guide to plan your trip. - [A King for a Kiwi](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/king-salmon/a-king-for-a-kiwi/): Prior to this past season, it had been several summers since I guided for Kenai River king salmon fishing. With low returns and restrictions, we largely refocused our efforts on the more abundant and predictable sockeye salmon. 2016 seemed to be a pivotal moment for the Kenai with improved king salmon returns not only here, but also across the state. Finding myself fishing the middle river just outside my home was like a blast from the past. It was actually very nostalgic to finally wet a line in the many fabled holes I had frequented so many times in my 27-year guiding career. While I was lucky enough to have several world-class king salmon swim into my net this past season, one fish in particular was special. If you are looking to embark on your own Kenai River guided fishing adventure, we are here to help you make memories that last a lifetime. - [Early Run Kasilof King Fishing on Fire](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/2017/early-run-kasilof-king-fishing-on-fire/): If you are a long-time visitor or resident of the Kenai Peninsula, you can likely remember the Kasilof River back in the 1990s, when it was teeming with kings throughout May and June. Many of these fish were hatchery-produced, originating from the Crooked Creek Hatchery, which was first established in the early 1970s. The initial smolt release occurred in 1975, and the planted fish were taken from wild Crooked Creek stock. Crooked Creek is a small, tannin-colored tributary to the Kasilof just above the tidal influence. Since then, this stocking program has undergone a number of changes, the most notable being the number of smolt released annually. If you would like to go with our Kasilof king salmon trips, let us know and we can make it happen! - [2016 Kasilof King Salmon](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-reports/2016/2016-kasilof-king-salmon/): King salmon fishing on the Kasilof was as good in 2016 as we have seen in well over a decade. We are always looking forward to more great action, but meanwhile, enjoy these pictures from 2016. As your Kasilof King Salmon trips team, we remain dedicated to providing you with the most up-to-date knowledge and the highest quality service on every trip, no matter what the season brings. - [2016 Kenai King Salmon Pictures](https://mgfalaska.com/fish-species/2016-kenai-king-salmon-pictures/): 2016 was definitely an encouraging year for Kenai River king salmon trips. Both the early and late runs saw improved numbers as well as a good number of larger kings. We proudly released the vast majority of the kings we caught this year. As your hire a Kenai River fishing guide specialists, we remain dedicated to the conservation efforts that protect these incredible runs for future seasons. ## Pages - [EAGLES NEST KENAI RIVER CABINS](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-cabins-rates/eagles-nest-cabin/): The Eagles Nest Cabins are located just two homes upriver from our main lodge and Kenai River front property.  These two cabins sit on a very nice 2 acre lot and are directly on the Kenai River.  Both cabins are identical and feature a full kitchen, full bath, upstairs loft with a king bed and full bed.  Downstairs features a fold out couch and a rollaway. Renowned for their appetite for loose salmon spawn, these fish are prolific egg eaters. - [STEELHEAD FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kasilof-river-fishing-guides/steelhead-fishing-trips/): Our Kasilof River steelhead fishing trips run from early September through November. We offer both full- and half-day charters, with a focus on quality over quantity—limiting trips to two anglers per boat, three at most. While fly fishing is the preferred method for these trips, we also offer spinning gear for those who prefer it. - [SILVER SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kasilof-river-fishing-guides/silver-salmon-fishing-trips/): The Kasilof sees a robust run of silver salmon annually with peak numbers arriving in the second and third week of August through the first few weeks of September.  We offer half and full day drift boat Kasilof River Salmon Fishing Trips. We fish both the upper Kasilof and the lower Kasilof for silvers depending on run timing, run strength and tides. - [SOCKEYE SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kasilof-river-fishing-guides/sockeye-salmon-fishing-trips/): We offer both half day and full day guided Kasilof river sockeye salmon fishing trips. Most of our guests prefer the half-day sockeye fishing trip as this provides the ideal amount of time to enjoy the float and fish one full tide. With good fish numbers, five hours allows plenty of time to catch a daily limit. For those wanting a little extra time on the water to ensure they have the best overall chance at limit catches, the full day trip is a good choice. - [KASILOF RIVER KING SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kasilof-river-fishing-guides/king-salmon-fishing-trips/): We offer half and full day early run Kasilof River king salmon fishing trips on the Lower Kasilof in May and June. Currently this hatchery return remains the only open freshwater king salmon fishery in all of South Central Alaska.  The late run of Kasilof King salmon (July) has been restricted or closed for much of the past decade. - [KASILOF RIVER FISHING GUIDES](https://mgfalaska.com/kasilof-river-fishing-guides/): Our fully guided fishing trips to the Kasilof River are conducted by drift boat and offer our guests prime opportunities to catch king salmon, sockeye salmon, silver salmon as well as steelhead. We've guided the Kenai since 1990 for king, sockeye, and silver salmon plus trophy rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Tell us your dates and the species you want, and we'll match you to the right half-day or full-day trip and handle the run timing. - [PINK SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-fishing-guides/pink-salmon-fishing-trips/): We offer both half and full day Kenai River Pink Salmon fishing trips. Pink salmon runs on the Kenai only occur on even numbered years and the peak of this fishery normally occurs in the first two weeks of August. - [KENAI KING SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-fishing-guides/king-salmon-fishing-trips/): Kenai King Salmon Fishing Trips on the Kenai River have always been famous for the genetically unique king salmon that return to their glacial waters. Since the early 1980’s, the Kenai has been the holy grail of king salmon fisheries with 8 of the 10 largest sport caught kings coming from its waters. In the last decade, king salmon stocks across the entire state of Alaska have been in serious decline resulting in restrictions for fishing king salmon. The reason for this decline point to a myriad of issues mainly connected their ocean environment. The Kenai has failed to meet the minimum escapement goal for both the early and late run Kenai King runs since 2017 and has been either closed or severely restricted every year since. - [KENAI RIVER SILVER SALMON FISHING TRIPS](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-fishing-guides/silver-salmon-fishing-trips/): We offer half and full day Kenai River silver salmon fishing trips as well as private guided charters on the Kenai River. We can take a maximum of five anglers per boat but unless the entire party is together, we typically limit capacity to four people per boat. For those wanting additional privacy or for those wanting to fly fish, we highly recommend considering the private boat option. - [KENAI RIVER SOCKEYE FISHING GUIDES](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-fishing-guides/sockeye-salmon-fishing-trips/): The limits for Kenai River Sockeye Salmon fishing trips change throughout the season. The limit for the early season is three fish per day, per person, until June 20 when the limit increases to six fish per person, per day. The six fish limit extends through August 15 and then goes back to three fish per person, per day on Aug 16. - [KENAI RIVER TROUT FISHING GUIDES](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-fishing-guides/trout-fishing-trips/): We offer both half and full day Kenai River Trout fishing trips, and rainbow trout season on the Kenai begins on June 11. The Kenai is closed for rainbow trout fishing May 1 – June 10 to allow the trout to complete their annual spring spawn. While fly fishing is one of the most effective methods for targeting Kenai River Rainbows, spinning gear is also very popular. Those wanting to fly fish are urged to consider the private boat option as two anglers per boat is ideal. - [KUSTATAN RIVER](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing-trips-alaska/kustatan-river/): The Kustatan River is one of the hidden gems in our Alaska sport fishing trips lineup, book early, space is limited each season. - [CRESCENT LAKE](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing-trips-alaska/crescent-lake/): CALL FOR INFORMATION 907-398-6405 - [ALASKA FISHING & LODGING PACKAGES](https://mgfalaska.com/alaska-fishing-lodging-combo-packages/): CALL FOR INFORMATION 907-398-6405 - [CHUITNA RIVER](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing-trips-alaska/chuitna-river/): For nearly three decades we have been offering fly in fishing trips to the Chuitna River. This was once a premier king salmon fishery and ideal for those looking for large king salmon in a relatively small and clear coastal river. The Chuitna holds some very magical fish and although the river has been completely closed for king fishing since 2011, it does host a prolific silver return in the fall. Our silver salmon trips begin on the Chuitna in late July and extend into the first week of September. - [BACHATNA CREEK ALASKA](https://mgfalaska.com/fly-in-fishing-trips-alaska/bachatna-creek/): We offer fly-in fishing trips to Bachatna Creek from late July through August. This remote and scenic creek offers an incredible silver salmon experience, but access is highly dependent on water levels, weather conditions, and the natural environment. - [MOOSEHORN ONE AND TWO CABINS](https://mgfalaska.com/kenai-river-cabins-rates/moosehorn-one-and-two-cabins/): Moosehorn One and Two Kenai River fishing cabins are located on their own private 2-acre lot across the street from our main Kenai River property. Both Kenai River cabins are essentially identical and feature two bedrooms, one full bath, a complete kitchen, all cooking and eating utensils, a dining table, a living room with flat screen smart TV, Starlink WiFi, and an outdoor deck with a gas barbecue. They sit in a very quiet setting with frequent visits from local wildlife. These cabins are a short walk to the Kenai River, and private fishing access. At just 19 years old and still attending college, he spent two summers guiding for Great Alaska before moving on to a more specialized operation, Alaska Pacific Fishing Adventures, located on the lower Kenai River. After a couple of seasons with them, Mark took the leap to independence—purchasing his own equipment, acquiring property along the Kenai, and establishing his own company: Alaska Fishing with Mark Glassmaker. - [TRIP PLANNING](https://mgfalaska.com/trip-planning/): Planning for Alaska fishing vacations is a huge task but a necessary and important step toward experiencing an unforgettable visit to the Kenai Peninsula.
