Bachatna Creek, Alaska Fly Out Information

I've been flying clients into Bachatna Creek for years, and it remains one of my favorite remote destinations on the west side of Cook Inlet. This small creek doesn't get the attention that some of Alaska's more famous rivers receive, but that's exactly why I keep coming back. The fishing pressure is minimal, the scenery is spectacular, and when the silver salmon are running, you'll have some of the best fly fishing opportunities you'll find anywhere in southcentral Alaska.

Bachatna Creek is primarily known for its excellent silver salmon fishing from late July through September. The silvers that push into this system are aggressive, chrome-bright fish that will hammer flies with abandon. I've watched clients hook fish on nearly every cast during peak periods. The creek's sandy bottom and clear water make it ideal for sight-fishing to salmon, which is a completely different experience from the larger, glacial-fed rivers most people associate with Alaska fishing.

Access is by floatplane only, with a 20-minute flight from North Kenai. Unlike other fly-in destinations, Bachatna Creek lacks nearby large lakes for standard floatplane landings, which limits our ability to reach it consistently. Access often requires chartering a helicopter or short flights with a Super Cub, both more costly options. In some years, beaver dams create ponds large enough for our turbine Otter to land, dramatically reducing costs.

Weather is always a consideration with fly-out trips. We need decent visibility for the flight, and conditions can change quickly on the west side of Cook Inlet. I always tell clients to build flexibility into their schedule when booking Bachatna Creek trips.
