Silver salmon begin returning to South Central Alaska in late July with the first catchable numbers arriving on the West Side of Cook Inlet. Kenai Peninsula silver salmon runs begin in early August with peak returns coming mid-August through late September. These aggressive biters are known for their acrobatic fights and are excellent table fare. Once they arrive, fishing action is very consistent, and limits are common. Silver salmon average 10-12 lbs., with larger fish weighing 15-20 lbs.
Kenai River Silver Salmon Alaska Fishing
Kenai Silver Salmon are aggressive biters and are known for their acrobatic fights, making them a favorite for all anglers. These fish can be quite a handful, especially on light tackle and they can be caught using a wide variety of techniques. Returns to the Kenai River support the largest recreational freshwater silver salmon fishery in all of Alaska. The Kenai has two distinct runs, the early run which peaks in mid to late August and the late run which begins in early September and peaks in late September and early October. Kasilof River Silvers arrive slightly later than the early run Kenai Coho with peak run timing occurring in the third and fourth week of August. Unlike the Kenai, the Kasilof sees just one distinct return of silvers and once they arrive in strength, fishing success is very high. We fish Kasilof Silver Salmon from a drift boat by bouncing salmon eggs as well as sardine wrapped plugs. This is a very serine and peaceful float punctuated by wide-open Coho salmon fishing in Alaska, which makes for a very memorable trip.
