GETTING HERE
Traveling to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula is much easier than many more remote Alaska fishing locations. When planning an Alaska trip, one simply needs to fly into Anchorage and from there, either rent a car, or take a commuter flight to the town of Kenai and rent a car from there.
WHEN TO VISIT
Despite it’s infamy, the Kenai is just as unpredictable as any salmon bearing river. Not even the most focused crystal ball will be able to predict the exact timing or ensuing strength of pending returns, and there are other factors to consider when planning a visit also.

Alaska Fishing License Requirements
All residents aged 18 or older, and non-residents aged 16 or older must possess a sport-fishing license to participate in sport and personal use fisheries in Alaska. In addition a King Salmon stamp is required to fish for King Salmon. Licenses can be purchased online from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADFG), and are also available at local tackle shops.
Planning an Alaska trip requires careful research and a firm understanding of the many options adventurers have available. With over 660,000 square miles of varied terrain, 44,000 miles of coastline, 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes, and endless small ponds and creeks, choosing where and when to plan your Alaska salmon, trout, fly out, or saltwater fishing adventure can be a daunting task. For the past 28 years, we have worked very hard to assist our guests in creating custom Alaska fishing trips and we look forward to helping you make the most of your fishing vacation to the Greatland.
Selecting the best time to plan an Alaska trip begins with several determining factors. From mid-May through late October, the Kenai Peninsula and surrounding waters offer a myriad of Alaska fishing options for a wide variety of species. Obviously, Alaska king salmon are the primary focus for many Alaska anglers, and the Kenai and neighboring Kasilof host world-class returns of four Pacific salmon species: king salmon, sockeye salmon, silver salmon, and pink salmon. Catch rates, limits, run timing, and eating quality are different for all the different salmon so doing some homework on these factors will help a lot when determining dates and overall goals for your own Alaska fishing adventure.
Alaska lodging is another big choice to consider and again, a multitude of factors will weigh into your decision. If you have selected the Kenai Peninsula as your destination, this opens a wide variety of accommodation options including everything from tent camping to full-service Alaska fishing lodges. Most Kenai Peninsula visitors prefer to stay in private, fully furnished vacation homes and use this as the perfect base camp for their Alaska fishing trips. The Soldotna vicinity offers a vast array of rental choices, both on and off the Kenai River.
